(504) 282-0089As Training Director of the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency at Tulane School of Medicine, she led the post-Katrina rebirth and grew the group from 1 resident to 10. As a National Health Service Corps Scholar, she split her time among multiple clinical settings in New Orleans including child and adolescent outpatient, school-based treatment, primary care clinics, hospitals, and residential addiction treatment centers.
Dr. Alvarez started the Integrated Behavioral Health program at Froedtert Health, leading collaborative care teams treating depression and anxiety in primary care and staffed the Complexity Intervention Unit at Froedtert Hospital. She was the founding Program Director at Medical College of Wisconsin’s new Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency.
Her early interest in pathways of care for initiating and maintaining buprenorphine in medical settings helped create the MAT program at DePaul Community Health Centers which led her back to New Orleans to continue program-building in behavioral health in primary care. She has expertise in addiction, adolescent medicine, medically unexplained symptoms and more.
Dr. Alvarez is the President-Elect of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry and is active in the American College of Physicians and the Academy of Consult-Liaison Psychiatry.
She is active with the Friends of City Park and New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute.
